Transformers

Transformer selection starts with the required voltage conversion, connected load and installation conditions. Explore general power transformation, renewable-energy interfaces and unusual operating duties as separate briefs before specifying construction and ratings.

Product routes

Match the transformer category to the electrical duty

Review the function and interfaces, then view the equipment or discuss the project requirements.

01 / 03

Power Transformer

Project-defined voltage conversion in a distribution or facility power system.

Typical duty
A defined primary-to-secondary voltage conversion in a distribution or facility power system. Compare dry-type and oil-immersed construction against the site and operating requirements.
Selection check
Review the dry-type or oil-immersed construction, rating and installation interface against the project data. A transformer alone is not a complete substation.

New Energy Dedicated Transformer

Transformer duty at a renewable-generation or storage power-conversion interface.

Typical duty
A solar, storage or other power-conversion project where the inverter or plant interface shapes the transformer duty. Identify the conversion stage and the equipment on each side.
Selection check
Define the transformer duty separately from the wider PV station assembly, including its electrical and installation interfaces.
Discuss renewable transformer duty

Special Transformer

A nonstandard transformer duty that needs a project-specific technical brief.

Typical duty
An operating duty that an ordinary power-distribution brief does not describe. Explain the connected equipment, operating pattern and constraints that make the requirement unusual.
Selection check
Set out the required performance and constraints; a category label alone cannot establish a suitable construction.
Discuss special transformer duty

Decision guide

Which transformer category fits the project?

Compare the application and design inputs before choosing a construction or asking for a rating table.

Project sequence

From network requirement to transformer brief

  1. 01Locate the conversion stage

Mark the transformer position on the single-line diagram, including the supply source, downstream load or power-conversion equipment and the required primary and secondary voltages.

  2. 02Describe the electrical duty

Record the required capacity, frequency, phases, load profile and any repeated start, cycling or bidirectional operating condition that the specification must address.

  3. 03Test the site constraints

Identify indoor or outdoor installation, ambient conditions, available space, access, cooling limitations and any restrictions on an oil-filled arrangement.

  4. 04Confirm the design basis

Add the target standard, loss or efficiency requirements, tap and vector-group requirements, drawings and quantity before comparing a proposed configuration.

A useful transformer enquiry separates what the power system needs from preferences about the equipment construction.

Engineering inputs

Bring the information that changes the route.

Power Transformer

  • Primary and secondary voltage
  • Required capacity and load profile
  • Indoor or outdoor location
  • Dry-type or oil-immersed preference, if already decided
  • Cooling, loss, tap and vector-group requirements

New Energy Dedicated Transformer

  • Generation or storage application
  • Inverter or conversion equipment output
  • Grid or collection interface
  • Operating pattern and plant single-line diagram
  • Site and environmental constraints

Special Transformer

  • What makes the duty nonstandard
  • Electrical and mechanical interface to connected equipment
  • Operation cycle and environment
  • Existing nameplate or reference drawing, if replacing equipment
  • Applicable technical specification

Procurement questions

Questions to resolve before specifying the equipment.

Should we choose dry-type or oil-immersed before sending the enquiry?

No fixed choice is needed at the first enquiry. State the installation location, cooling and maintenance constraints, voltage combination and load duty. Those inputs let the construction paths be compared against the same project brief.

Does a transformer enquiry also define a complete substation?

No. A substation brief also identifies switching, protection, metering, low-voltage distribution, enclosure and site interfaces. Use the Substations & Prefabricated Cabin family when the requested scope is a coordinated station rather than a transformer alone.

What makes a renewable-energy transformer brief different?

Show the transformer in relation to the inverter or conversion block and the collection or grid connection. The operating pattern, control boundary and plant drawing matter alongside the usual voltage and capacity inputs.

Can we use an existing transformer's nameplate for a replacement enquiry?

Yes. Include a legible nameplate, electrical specification, connection and outline drawings, plus the constraints that must remain unchanged. A nameplate alone may not show all site and cable-interface conditions.

Can one rating table cover every transformer in this family?

No. Dry-type, oil-immersed and special-duty transformers require separate specifications. State the electrical duty and construction requirement so the relevant model data can be checked.
