Ring main unit beside a medium-voltage switchgear lineup

Ring Main Unit vs. Medium-Voltage Switchgear: A Project Selection Guide

Compare RMU and medium-voltage switchgear by network arrangement, functional scope, installation and operating requirements.

Ring main units and medium-voltage switchgear both support distribution systems, but they are not selected by voltage class alone. The better route depends on network topology, feeder quantity, protection functions, space, access and the way the installation will be operated.

Where an RMU is commonly considered

An RMU is often considered where a compact medium-voltage arrangement is needed for ring or radial distribution. It can be a practical starting point for local network points, compact substations and sites where the feeder arrangement is clearly defined.

Before choosing an RMU, define the required incoming and outgoing ways, transformer protection approach, switching duty, cable interfaces, remote-control requirement and the expected operating conditions at the site.

Where switchgear is commonly considered

Medium-voltage switchgear is usually reviewed when the project needs more feeders, more extensive protection and control functions, a specific lineup arrangement or greater scope for future modification. The physical room layout, maintenance access and cable routing can be as important as the single-line diagram.

Switchgear selection should consider the full lineup: incomers, bus section where applicable, outgoing feeders, transformer panels, protection relays, metering and auxiliary supply requirements.

Compare the project conditions, not only the equipment

  • Network arrangement: ring, radial, single or multiple supply paths
  • Functional scope: switching, protection, measurement, automation and control
  • Installation: compact enclosure, substation room, access and cable approach
  • Operations: routine switching, isolation needs, maintenance approach and expansion plans
  • Documentation: single-line diagram, protection philosophy and interface schedule

A clear project brief makes the comparison practical. Share the one-line diagram, required feeder functions, voltage class, site arrangement and any existing equipment interfaces before requesting a configuration.

Discuss an RMU or switchgear configuration.
